Easter Bird Race

Andrew over at http://www.quicksilverbirds.blogspot.com has been holding an Easter bird race. As we had a not too busy weekend and the weather forecast had predicted that there was going to be quite a bit of rain I didn't think my chance of winning would be very high but it would be a bit of fun.

The rules were simple enough. Count every bird species you come across over the four day weekend and send in your score. Full details and results will be on Andrew's blog. I added an additional rule of my own, I actually had to see the birds, counting bird song didn't count.

As predicted the weather was not great three out of the four days saw quite a bit of rain so my bird counts were mostly restricted to those seen in the garden or when out walking the dog.

My total score is 21, and if I'd not added the rule about bird song it would have been a little higher, but I prefer to see the birds I'm counting. Finally here's my species list:

Dunnock
Crow
Black-Headed Gull
Blackbird
Wood pigeon
Collared dove
Starling
Blue tit
Great tit
Robin
House sparrow
Grey heron
Greater-spotted woodpecker
Magpie
Mute swan
Garden warbler
Goldfinch
Lapwing
Mallard
Coot
Herring gull

Catch-Up

Well it's been a while since we were on holiday and the days of posting nearly every day have waned since we've been home and I've been back at work.

Life goes on.

Back at work, initially in a kind of surreal kind of half-life. Having had such a long time off and having been able to totally relax while we were away it's really quite strange.

The garden birds are pleased to see us back at least. We'd left them out plenty of food but they managed to go through it rapidly. I watched them last night after I got home. I'd just fed them and within moments wood pigeons and starlings arrived and decimated their provisions. The pigeons are quite sedate but the starlings are more enthusiastic. They almost dive into the seed and fling it everywhere. When they're done with what's in the feeder, they drop to the ground and gather up all the seed they've dropped.

It' been two years since we moved house, it doesn't seem like it though. Our boiler is on it's last legs. I'm surprised it's lasted this long to be honest but pleased that it's gotten us through two winters and given us time to save up for it's replacement. They're coming to do that next month.

In gaming news I've been playing Tom Clancy's "HAWX", it was a birthday present. Am quite enjoying it, but seem to have a problem with the ground. I keep flying my plane into it!

It's Good To Be Home?

After a week away is it good to be home?
Back to clean the car, do some grocery shopping. All those mundane things that are what they are.

So today was car cleaning day and pond cleaning day (only to find the last of our goldfish. Dead with a suspicious, heron peck hole in him).

It is good to be home, the fact that I have a few more days before I have to go back to work is even better, but I think I rather still be on holiday.

Holiday Day Six - Last Day

Last day of our holiday today, tomorrow we must return home. It's been a great week, which means heading for home is hard.

I've been bribing myself with the prospects of playing the new PS3 game that I was given for my birthday, but which yet for obvious reasons have yet to take out of the cellophane wrapper. Also the thoughts of seeing what's happened on the allotment and in the garden while we've been away. The fact that we've been to so many gardens this week means that I have lots of ideas for things I might try in both.

So tomorrow we rise early than we have been all week, load the car and set for home, probably relatively slowly though.

Holiday Day Five

It's strange how the smallest unrelated things can spark a memory.

We visited Trevano gardens yesterday and something I saw there reminded me of something that happened over ten years ago. The same memory was triggered by something else completely unrelated about a week ago. I can't help wonder why that memory in particular keeps resurfacing?

Anyway today is the final full day of our holiday (day six), tomorrow we must make tracks for home, another garden (Trewithen) to see today, and the weather looks good.

Holiday Day Three - Bats & Bamboozle

Every evening when we return around dusk there are several bats flying backwards and forwards across the yard where we park. They're engaged in hunting for their supper but I'm a little surprised to see them as it's still so cold. My guess is they've had such a hard winter that they are about now hunting because they have no choice and without sufficient food they will perish.

In other news I've sent a picture to twitpic of the bamboozle where we spent some time today in amongst the twenty or so metre high bamboo.

Holiday Day Two

The Japanese Zen Gardens today. Very tranquil and inspirational. In between the hail showers that is!

Something I've learnt about always trying to take a holiday around my birthday, is just how unpredictable the weather can be at this time of year. My motto on these occasions is just to get on with it and ignore the weather. If we waited for the sun to come out we might never do anything.

On planning our trips this week we seem to have programmed a lot of garden visits. This didn't dawn on me until I wrote them all down and realised then that's what we'd planned, fine by me though as really the holiday season has yet to take off so most things are still closed for the winter.
Getting lots of reading (and evidently blogging) done too.

Some photos of todays gardens available via twitter\twitpic, link in my sidebar.

Holiday Day One

First full day of holiday and we're really just settling in.

Went for a nice long walk this morning with the dog, along the Camel Trail. Didn't see any though!

The rest of the holiday looks set to be a round trip of gardens with the occasional bookshop thrown in for good measure, and that suits is fine.

Off to have dinner with my cousin and Saga's newest member this evening. Japanese bonsai garden tomorrow.

Start of a Holiday

I started my holiday yesterday. Just over 2 glorious weeks of no work and on this occasion a self imposed rule of no DIY.

Well that fell by the wayside on the first day. Unfortunately my GF broke our back gate or at least it came off in her hand! When I looked close I could see the gate was fine but the whole frame was rotten. So 2 days later lots of new wood, some screws and some nails later we have a new gate or at least gate frame, I reused the old gate.

So that's my DIY limit for this holiday. I hope!

Back to watching the birds in the garden and relaxing.

Pass another beer.

I spent quite some time last night on the internet looking at maps. Or perhaps I should say trying to find the right maps to buy for our holiday next month. The problem is Amazon lists them by their title and not their number so despite knowing the reference numbers of the maps I wanted I had no idea what their titles were. Still at a saving of £2.00 a map it was worth the extra effort.

Why new maps? Well when I got my old ones out, to try and follow the directions we've been given to where we're staying I couldn't a couple of the roads described or some of the landmarks. Looking at the copyright dates on the maps they're nearly 20 years old. I would like to be able to find our holiday home on day one, it'll get the holiday off to a good start.

A Little Bit Of The Cold, White, Wet Stuff

I could easily be wrong because childhood memories are probably not that reliable, but when I was a child I remember us having a week or two of snow at time.

What I don't remember is my school ever shutting and the bus that took me there and back each day used to travel cross country, on narrow country roads and it never got stuck. This isn't what's worrying me though. What concerns me more is the future.

Snow and ice we know about but as our climate changes and things heat up more, what then? We've had a taster and we kinda didn't do too well then either. Remember summer 2003? Record high temperatures? Back then people died from heat exhaustion, trains couldn't run because of buckled tracks.

My point? Well we can't cope with snow, but that'll be less of an issue in the future. The temperatures of summer 2003 will be commonplace within about ten years or so and probably a mild summer by the middle of the century. So perhaps we should think a little more about that than the snow and make the most of the white stuff while we can?

Fallout 3 (May Contain Spoilers)

I was given this game of a post apocalyptical Washington for Christmas and I've been playing it ever since. Well until last weekend when I completed it.

You don't win, depending on your path you might live or you might die. Along the way you meet mutations both human and animal, some friendly, most not. You choose your own path, good or evil. You explore the incredibly detailed world of this game like something out of a movie or science fiction novel.

If you like adventure games, then I can't recommend Fallout 3 strongly enough.

So Here's An Idea

I've said before that I need to post when the idea hits me or at least reasonably soon afterwards before I forget.

I used to keep a little notebook in my pocket to write ideas down in when they came to me, but back then I was a little prolific with my writing anyway. It struck me yesterday however when I was looking at the Lapwing on the playing field that I really ought to make a note of it, and having only my mobile phone with me sent a twitter. I know that sending a twitter will also (eventually) create a post here, but in twitter's 140 characters that isn't really much to say what I really thought, so hence my idea.

If I twitter something when the idea strikes, I could always come back at a later date, when I have more time and use that to prompt me into writing a post?

Well the whole lapwing sighting was (for me) quite exciting, mostly because I've never seen one on that field before. They're normally reserved for fields or shoreline and not sports pitches in the middle of suburbia. Evidently not. Which reminds me that I've been quite fortunate in the birds that I've seen within yards of my home just recently. Add to the lapwing, buzzard, and grey wagtail (in our back garden) in just the last week, and that's on top of all the extra activity in the garden because it's been so cold it's been quite a week.

An Update of Sorts

Well I've not posted properly since the middle of September. Some days I've missed it terribly, others not at all. Put simply the reason for this latest hiatus (and probably most others), is lack of time.

At the moment time is taken up with work, looking after my gf, and doing many of the other things that I would like to sit and write posts about. I'm still down on the allotment, I'm still watching the comings and goings in the garden (today for example it's absolutely teeming in birds (probably because it was so cold last night - the garden sensor on the weather machine got down to -5.8 centigrade)). I still watch telly, read books, and watch films (although we haven't been to the cinema in months). What I don't seem to have the time to do is sit and write about them. For me, I have to post when the inspiration strikes, and this normally means when I don't have the time.

So whilst others are writing their reviews of 2008, and their resolutions for 2009, I'm giving you an explanation of what's not been going on here. Will it get better? Probably not in the short term at least. I've just had nearly two weeks work free and this is the first time I've managed to sit down and post that whole time, the day before I go back to work. I won't make promises, but I can't bring myself to close down the blog altogether either.

In the meantime I wish you all a very belated Happy Christmas, and hope that 2009 treats you well.
